What is Botox?

Botox is a prescription injection that contains a purified protein derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Though this is the same toxin that causes botulism — a foodborne illness — Botox is administered in very small doses in specific areas and is safe, especially when administered by a health care professional.

The injection is a neurotoxin that works by temporarily stopping communication between nerves and the brain to get the desired results.

What does Botox treat?

Botox has many uses. Health care providers use the injection to treat medical issues like chronic migraines and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). However, Botox is best known as a cosmetic injection, treating facial lines and wrinkles such as:

  • Worry lines (forehead wrinkles)
  • Frown lines (lines in between eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (lines at the outer corner of each eye)

These facial wrinkles develop because of age-related changes that affect the skin and repetitive facial movements. As you get older, your skin’s production of collagen (a protein that gives skin its strength and elasticity) slows. Loss of collagen plays a role in the development of lines and wrinkles.

Facial expressions also contribute to the visible signs of aging. Every time you squint or furrow your brow, the facial muscles create grooves that fold the skin. Without enough collagen, your skin loses its ability to smooth the lines and wrinkles from the repetitive folding, leading to permanent wrinkles.

Botox temporarily stops the muscle movement that folds the skin, allowing the wrinkles to smooth.

What happens during Botox injections?

Your provider at HippoMed Wellness Clinics customizes your Botox injections after a consultation and reviews the details with you.

After cleaning your skin with an antiseptic agent, your provider injects small amounts of Botox into specific areas of the face to get the look you want. The injections cause minimal pain and take only a few minutes.

You can resume your normal activities after your cosmetic injections.

When can I expect to see results from Botox?

You may start to see improvements in your look within 1-2 days after your injections. However, Botox takes time to work, and final results may take up to 30 days and last 3-4 months.

HippoMed Wellness Clinics recommends returning to the clinic for your next Botox session when you see a return of your wrinkles. Regular Botox injections help you maintain your youthful look and may prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming.

The primary care and wellness clinic also provides fillers and may suggest combining cosmetic injections for more dramatic results.
