Physical Exams Q & A

What are physical exams?

A physical exam at HippoMed Wellness Clinics includes a comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment when necessary. Getting an annual physical is one of the best ways to screen for diseases and reduce your risk of developing serious medical problems in the future. Dr. Jenks offers annual men’s health and women’s health exams.

What should I expect during annual physical exams?

When you arrive at HippoMed Wellness Clinics for your physical, you won’t experience a long wait time. The practice prides itself on serving its patients quickly yet thoroughly. Your physical exam includes:

Vital signs check

During a vital signs check, your provider evaluates your blood pressure, body weight, pulse, and other vital signs.

Medical history review

Dr. Jenks reviews your personal and family medical history. He asks questions about your symptoms, medications, past diagnoses, and lifestyle habits.

Physical examination

During a physical examination, Dr. Jenks evaluates your eyes, ears, throat, breathing, reflexes, abdomen, and heart rate. He might complete a prostate cancer screening in men and a breast and gynecological exam in women.

If you need a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer, Dr. Jenks inserts a speculum into your vagina, takes a sample of cervical cells, and sends the sample to a lab for analysis.

Diagnostic testing

Depending on your health history and risk factors, Dr. Jenks might recommend you undergo specific diagnostic tests to detect or rule out medical problems. Examples include blood tests, urine or stool tests, sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, electrocardiograms (EKGs), allergy or asthma testing, X-rays, or other imaging procedures.

Will I need treatment after a physical?

If you’re in good health, you likely won’t require any treatment, but Dr. Jenks of HippoMed Wellness Clinics offers the following treatments and preventive medicine solutions:

  • Nutrition and weight loss counseling
  • Dietary supplement recommendations
  • Medication prescriptions
  • Birth control
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Vaccinations
  • Mole or wart removal
  • Minor surgical procedure
  • Further diagnostic testing
  • Specialist referrals

Dr. Jenks can refer you to a highly trained specialist as needed if you have a complex medical problem. He offers follow-ups regarding your treatment via virtual telemedicine. Schedule physicals every year, or make an appointment if you experience new or unusual symptoms.
